Wondering how to keep the kids entertained when all you want to do is relax? We’ve got the answer (well at least an afternoon’s worth!).

Pebble art or painting rocks can provide hours of free fun – have you ever been out on a walk and found a cute painted rock and re-hidden it for the next family? Well we do it all the time and its a great way to get your kids out and about and enjoying the outdoors.

We have a big box of paints and brushes at reception available for all our guests to borrow (as you rarely bring paints camping or caravanning!) – so all you need to do is get out there and find some pebbles to paint.

You can keep your pebbles as a holiday memory, hide them whilst you are here or take them home and hide them there. Let’s see how far across the country (or world?) we can spread the pebble love. We just ask you tag #pennineviewrocks so we can track them down. So get painting people and remember to keep an eagle eye out when on your outdoor adventures….

Doing our bit and going green

We have made a promise to ourselves (which I’m now sharing with you) to do whatever we can to be more sustainable this year. The news of the environment and the impacts on our world can be very startling but we believe a little can change a lot – if we all make small achievable changes then it makes a big difference in the bigger picture.

So our first ‘change’ is in our cleaning products and chemical usage. We have decided to invest in Eco-friendly cleaning products, all of which can be re-filled at another successful Kirkby Stephen business Out of Eden. So not only will we be using less harmful chemicals, we will be reducing our single use plastic consumption and reducing our carbon footprint by using a local supplier. Win Win Win!

We pressure washed our hardstanding areas instead of using chemical wash, we are avoiding overuse of weed killer and trying our hardest to simply dig out what needs digging out. We are also investing in a ‘green’ roof for our renovated shower block, hopefully it has a softer impact on the wildlife (and will look pretty cool).

There will be more to come and we will shout about it when we can, whilst we currently don’t separate recycling we are assured by our waste collectors that it is all sent to a recycling plant and 0% goes to landfill. However we will be looking into improvements throughout the year so watch this space – every little helps.

Update 2021:

We have also invested in water saving devices in our older toilet cisterns and have switched our energy tariff to 100% renewable energy. We have limited planting space directly on the park however we have squeezed in over 200m of new native hedgerows in the past year, which should begin to take shape in the next year or so.

We are hoping to introduce rainwater harvesting systems and solar energy in the coming year (2022). Hopefully these little changes will help to reduce our carbon footprint as we continue to move forwards!
